Pack the gear
Tonight you're camping out under the stars, even if just for the evening. Check these off ahead of time.Tonight you're camping out in your own living room. Check these off ahead of time.
Campfire games
Every good campout starts with a little fun around the fire. Play these while the fire gets going.
Each of you tells three stories from your childhood: two true, one made up. Your spouse guesses the tall tale.
Hold the flashlight like a seasoned storyteller and tell the story of how we met, as if you're telling it to our grandkids around the fire someday. Big gestures and dramatic voices encouraged.
Take turns giving silly orders, like "Camp counselor says hop on one foot." Forget to say "camp counselor says," and you owe your spouse a kiss.
Seal the campsite with a quick kiss before you move on.
Flashlight questions
Turn the lights down low. Tap the flashlight for a question, then shine your flashlight on your spouse while they answer. Eight questions, then it's s'mores time.
S'more than words
Roast a marshmallow for each other, then slide it onto a graham cracker with a square of chocolate and top it with another cracker. Every time you hand your spouse a s'more,Make s'mores for each other in the kitchen, then bring them back to the fort. Every time you hand your spouse a s'more, say one thing you love about them that you haven't said in a while.
Microwave: Set a graham cracker on a plate, add a piece of chocolate, then a marshmallow on top. Heat for 10 to 15 seconds, just until the marshmallow puffs. Top with another cracker, press gently, and wait about a minute so the chocolate softens.
Oven: Put a marshmallow on each graham cracker on a foil-lined baking sheet. Leave the chocolate out for now. Broil on the top rack for 15 to 30 seconds, until golden. Watch closely; they toast fast. Then add the chocolate, top with another cracker, press gently, and wait a minute.
Keep open flames out of the fort and the living room.
Each of you pick your style. Opposites attract.
- A sweet thing you did for me that I never forgot is…
- Something about you that still gives me butterflies is…
- The best "adventure" we've ever had together was…
- If we went on a real camping trip, the thing you'd be best at is…
Read the night sky
Lie back and look up. Open the fort door, or turn off the lights and look out a window. Each "constellation" is a question. Take turns answering, starting with {H}.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands."PSALM 19:1 (BSB)
Hold hands. Thank the God who made every star for bringing the two of you together, and ask Him to keep your love burning bright, out loud or silently.
Keep the fire going
A campfire needs a little fuel to keep burning. So does a marriage.
Pick one thing you'll add to the fire this month.
- My favorite moment around the fire tonight was…
- One way I want to keep our fire going this week is…
Before you leave, put your fire completely out. Drown it, stir it, and make sure it's cold.
Seven seconds by the glow. Longer is allowed.
The stars are out and the fire is glowing. End the night the way every great campout ends: wrapped up together, sealed with a kiss.
